As I write by the light of my Christmas tree on a late winter’s night, I reflect upon the poignancy and purpose of this season.  The tiny white lights look like strands of pearls draped gracefully (perhaps haphazardly is a more honest description) across the evergreen boughs.  Tomorrow I will hang the ornaments and at last place the angel atop the tree   

Angels carry a special meaning this Christmas.  My brother, Randy passed away on December 2nd from a heart attack at age 53.  He was feeding a stray cat on his side porch.  Randy was always like St. Francis of Asissi – animals would find him, sensing a kind soul.  And my brother was a gentle and patient soul.  He loved to fish.  He tried to teach me, but I immediately lost interest when I realized worms were involved. And I could never sit still on the banks of a river and just wait.  However, Randy could do that.  He could wait, and waiting is a true gift.  He put into practice the Scriptures.  “Wait upon the Lord.”  “Be still and know that He is God.”  Patience doesn’t have to be passive.  Wait is still an action verb.  Part of the waiting process for fishing is seeking.  Elaine (Randy’s wife of 31 years) told me that Randy said he could see the fish deep beneath the waters.  He actively waited for the right time to catch them.

During Randy’s last fishing trip on earth – just a week before his death, he felt an urgency to take a picture of the clouds with his cell phone.  When he returned home, he showed the picture to Elaine.  They realized that a face of an angel was looking at Randy from the sky – perhaps waiting for God’s timing to bring Randy home to heaven.  Maybe this “angel in the sky” was part of the heavenly host that appeared to the shepherds over two thousand years ago.  A Christmas Angel.

The Christmas Angels brought tidings of great joy that Jesus, our Lord and Savior was born.  And because of that incredible gift from God that these angels announced, we all have the promise of eternity. As we await Christ’s return, let us actively wait by seeking fish – not the kind you have to catch with worms, but rather with words.  Words, or rather good tidings, can bring hope to the hopeless and faith to the faithless. 

May each of you be blessed this Christmas season by the words you say, the words you hear and the Word you share.   And may the 12 Pearls of Christmas be a blessing to you, too.

Mary, did you know . . . that your baby boy is Heaven’s perfect Lamb?  And the sleeping child you’re holding is the great I AM?

I am in the middle of a revival of my used-to-be-annual project of a Christmas card sketch.  For several years, with a few years missed, I have done a sketch of some image of Mary the Mother of Jesus, something that came to my mind without complete awareness of why that particular picture was needing to be put to paper.  It was originally a simple pencil sketch that, once completed, I would have printed out into a set of cards that would go out to all my friends and family.  Along with the sketch, however, I have always had a verse that came to mind to signify the meaning of the drawing in my mind.  And so I have had images such as “Be it unto me according to your word,” as well as a more enigmatic one that went with “Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me . . .”  But each one was important for that year of my life.  And so I would spend the necessary costs in order to produce and mail in relatively large scales, for my general penny-pinching tendencies.

This year I did not expect to produce a card.  The fact of my life lately as a boarding school librarian/teacher in Zambia, Africa, has made such projects feel rather far-removed from the realm of possibility.

And yet, I have had an image in my head for several months now.  I started to put it to paper, and I abandoned it for a bit, figuring it was a bit frivolous with all the practical work I had to do.  But then I picked it up again, and it is now nearing the stage of completion, hopefully to be completed with printing and mailing once I arrive in the U.S. for a holiday visit with family.

What I realized is that, frivolous though it may seem, it is actually quite important.  For women [especially Western women of faith], the holidays carry with them great amounts of expectation and stresses.  So much so that we often get swallowed up with the hectic pace and forget to soak in the meaning.  What is important for each of us, I believe, is to “pick and choose.”  We must resist the pressure to do what doesn’t not bring meaning for us.  And we must cling to those traditions and activities that promote an aura of true, Christ-centered celebration for ourselves and for our loved ones.

So this year, Lord willing, I will be sending out my cards—and enjoying every bit of it; and in case you wondered, Mary did you know . . .?  will be the theme

Where do I begin?  Simply.  Loved It. It was exactly what I expected and hoped for and more.  This is my first chance to read any of Donita K. Paul's work and I am glad to have had the chance. 

This was a darling romance in the style of a Cinderella kind of story complete with the wicked step sister.  But the ending was just absolutely adorable. 

I loved the way that Miss Paul used a fun romantic story added a little bit of enchantment and kept it filled with biblical truth. 

I know it is close to Christmas but I bet you still have time to order online and get it for that special someone.

Marathon Book Review #3 Flight Plan the review

I wish they had written this about 15 years ago!  It was by the grace of God that we made it through the teenage years!  If your almost there right now this is the book you need. 

When this one was offered I was really excited because of the subtitle . . . Flight Plan your mission to become a man.      This book is written for the christian family that wants to grow their young sons into Godly men, husbands and fathers.   

It is written in a way that will catch the adult and the young boys attention.

Thankful Thursday

Welcome to Thankful Thursday hosted and created by Iris.
Today she got me to thinking about friendship. 
I am thankful for friends. 
Iris mentioned praying for a friend at work.  Not just any friend someone that she could talk to and share her faith.  Iris was greatly blessed not only to find a friend but what she didn't mention was she saw an answered prayer! 
I am Blessed when I actually see a true answer to a prayer. 
Do you sometimes wonder about prayer. Do you sometimes wonder about God's timing compared to yours? 
I have been there and done that!  (I wish I could have used a bigger font to express the vastness of that last statement)
God has answered my prayers many times.  But there have been many times when I have wondered where he was. 
This past year has been one of the hardest years of my life. 
But today I sit here with a computer, inter-net and electricity.  I am thanful. 
There is food in my refrigerator.   I am thankful
I am thankful I have a place to live.
I have a car that runs.  I am thankful 
I am thankful for past friendships.  I am thankful that God put certain people in my path at certain times. 
I am thankful that God gave me a friend that prayed for me everyday during those difficult times this spring.  And emailed me.
I could go on and on but I know you don't need to read more of my list. 
I pray that today you have a list of thankfulness.  And, I pray that you see God answer a prayer.

And since it is my birthday I am doing something crazy.  Well actually I'll be gone all day taking my mother to the doctor and then she is taking me to lunch.  But to celebrate I am giving away two books.  Actually I am not; the author's are giving them away for my birthday. 
I read both of these recently and I thought they were both great.
But for completely different reasons.

Prayer for My Daughter

As I sit and write this post my daughter is in a 6th job interview. 
This one with the V.P. of the company.  She has been going through this process for over 8 weeks.   The interesting thing is she is not totally sure what position she is even interviewing for.  She began the process just trying to get 'a foot in the door' with this firm.  Each of the different department leads that she has met have all asked the same question about one of her answers in the initial interview.  It seemed like just a normal interview question but her answer was a marketing suggestion so, we are prayerful that she is moving up the ladder and will be offered a great position. 

As I think of her and all the dynamics involved and how much she really needs this position I think about her faith and trust in God. 
I think about how she knows that whatever happens that God is in control and if she puts her faith and trust in him and if she asks for his guidance that he will answer her prayer and show her the way.

Her faith and hope is in her Father God. 

As I think of her faith I also think of the youth that I work with.  And, I am reminded of last Thursday evening.  I was doing an activity night at the halfway house.  I had arranged to have Santa visit.  It was a fun evening.  All the girls sat on Santa's lap and told him what they want for Christmas.  It was all fun and silly one asked for fried chicken.  But it was this comment that got to me.  I can't remember exactly how she said it.  But in a quiet whisper she asked . . . "Do you talk to God?"  Santa answered.  "Of course everyday."  Even more quietly she asked him.  "Would you ask God to make everyone happy in this house?".  In that moment I felt the presence of God in that room.   Another girl told Santa she wants a family.  Cowboy talked to her later and found out that although she has an adopted family in her anger and frustration she has burned bridges with them.  She is 18 and has no family and no where to go once she is released.  She told Cowboy she had been in and out of foster care since the time she was a new born. 

This was not the post that I intended to write here today.  And, I don't even know how many of you guys will happen in but.  I hope that whoever reads this will pray for my daughter.  And the girls and boys that we work with.   There is so much need in our country.  There are so many people young and old that need to know about God.    They need to hear of his great love and they need to know that they can put their faith and trust in Him.  And that they don't have to ask someone else to talk to Him for them that they can do it themselves.

Thankful Thursday Thanksgiving Busyness

I spent a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend.   I am thankful.
It all began Wednesday when I went to our daughters lugging a big 'ole turkey.   We got the 'big ole bird in the oven then we went for
Donuts.  In 2 year old language that is pronounced like the word 'do' not 'dough'. LOL.  And btw dawng I forgot the camera!  We had a great day preparing.
And then on Thursday it started like this . . . (I remembered the camera)

Cowboy aka 'Pa' making jalepeno poppers.  He had a little help. 
The baby stired the cheese. 

Then we all ate the poppers and quacamole. (did I spell that right?)
While we waited for the entertainment to start.

Here's the main act about to warm up.  Sorry I didn't get any action photo's but we were asked not to take photo's during the performance because the camera flashes distract the entertainer. 
(actually I don't know how to change the setting on my camera and he moved to fast to capture.  But that sounded good!)

And here's the beautiful table our daughter set.

"Bil Cornelius lays the foundation for how to make change happen and experience the most out of life."    I live near Fellowship Church.  Actually my daughter is a member and I get to go to Fellowship frequently and personally I think if Ed Young recommends the book it is enough for me.

Robert  . . .Pastor Bil has managed to take what some people believe to be complicated and made it simple. His writing is easy and the concepts are simple, but the message is powerful: you CAN change. It's hard not to get caught up in his energy and enthusiasm, so I recommend this book to anyone who has felt stuck and unable to get off the couch and do something meaningful in their lives.

JosephC - This is a great book. Bil uses great biblical principles and awesome business princples to create change. Do the excercises and you will start to change. Don't just read it, act on it.

And a little from an interview I found on the Guideposts (the publisher)  website . . .
 So many of the faith messages we hear today fall into the trap of helping you run into the arms of Jesus, but don’t explain that those arms also are there to stand you up, brush you off, offer a word of encouragement, and get you back out there to living life. Cornelius asks that you not buy into a passive theology like that, and instead take the strength and guidance of the Holy Spirit, and Jesus’ forgiveness for the times you fall short, and dare yourself to keep moving, growing, and finding your way to new blessings.
If I was considering buying the book and I wasn't convenienced by Ed Young's endorsement the words above in bold would have been what I needed to check it out myself and to take the strength and guidance of the Holy Spirit, and Jesus' forgiveness and to keep moving, growing and finding my way to new blessings.

Mission 4 Monday Quilts and more Quilts

Today for Mission 4 Monday I thought I would share a few archived photo's of quilts made at Mission Makeover.  I was looking for blue to post for Blue Monday over here.  So I thought I would share them for Mission 4 Monday too.

 This great dining room table is where much of our ministry happened.  Each week day afternoon this table was filled with boys and girls.  We learned very early in the ministry that the meal that the kids got to eat with us that evening was the best meal most of them had in a long time.  So instead of sandwichs we prayed God would provide meals.  And he did!  Every evening we served a home cooked meal.   Most days the boys and girls ate seperately.  But occassionally depending on the group and the devotional we were doing we would all eat together as one big family.

And now on with the blue quilts!

 These are just a few examples of the hundreds of quilts that we produced.  I especially liked the combo of blue and orange. 

All the fabric was donated.  Some of it was quilt quality some was not.  I figured out a way to use the less desirable fabric and we began making pillowcases.  I have a couple made from polyester fabric and I love them. 

We always made simple straight line sewing so the girls could feel the accomplishment of finishing the project very quickly.

Yes you can.  All you have to do is sign up at Good Search and instead of using google us this search engine.  It is powered by Yahoo and is completely safe.  I am now using it all the time.  But I know it is hard to make a change.  And so if you would consider just a couple of searches a day it would help us out.
