Introduction to an Amish Author

I can't wait to read this cookbook.  I was excited to be offered it for review.  It'll be available August 1.  You might want to check out pre-sale at the retail sites.

Today I want to introduce you to the author.   I visited her website and had a lot of fun.  Click here (turn on your sound)

Here's the authors welcome to her site . . .
Welcome to my writing world. It is my hope that you will not only enjoy a good story when reading one of my books, but will learn more about the Amish way of life.
As I have come to know and love my special Amish Friends, I've been filled with the realization that, while they may live and dress differently than most of us "Englishers," they experience the same joys and deal with the same struggles as we do. Writing about the Amish fills my heart with joy and peace. I hope reading about the Amish will do that for you as well.
Mitt Lieb, (With love),

The website is interesting to visit.  Not only does she share her list of books she share photos.  And there are free downloads to use for your desktop.  Here's one . . .
Working in the Garden free desktop picture

I was glad I was introduced to a new author.

                                      Go over for a visit.

Food With Friends-A Cookbook Review

                                             Delightful
If I had only one word to share about this cookbook it would be
                                             Delightful
I mean just look at the cover.  Who doesn't love a Deviled Egg?
And this one is actually red.  I was fascinated by the cover photo and wanted to know how to make some myself.

OK.  So I get it maybe your not a Deviled Egg fan.  Check out the back cover . . .

Yumminess!
I admit I haven't had a chance to try any of the recipes but the
fabulous photo's beg you to give it a try.

The inside of the cookbook is just as fabulous as the front and back cover.   It was truly a 'delight' for me to read.

I loved how the author started with sharing a few of her Secret Ingredients.

And follows with her Style FileI love the vintage feel of the photos.  The food is 'shot' surrounded by vintage table ware and set on vintage linens.

After reading a few of the recipes I began to wonder how to describe this cookbook.  The word Modern came to mind.
Many of the recipes are for foods that I've never tried or even heard of.  But the photo's make me want to try most of them except maybe the olives.  I'm not a fan of olives and really don't know anyone who is.

As I looked at the different recipes and ingredients many I had never heard of or cooked I began to wonder a little about the author and her background.  I went back to the introduction and enjoyed reading about her style and background.

Recipes include items like: Lemon-Poppy Seed Dutch Baby (in the breakfast and lunch chapter) and Avocado & Coconut Tartlets (I never met an
Avocado I didn't like).  I especially liked the Anything Goes Breakfast Board.  Other chapters include Teatime, Happy Hour (which is where I found the Deviled Egg recipe ) Potlucks & Picnics, Desserts and Tiny Take Aways.

Although the book is titled Food With Friends it is filled with wonderful yummy dishes you'll want to serve to your family.

Although I would buy this cookbook for my 88 year old mother
(who still cooks)  I sincerely doubt she would actually try any of these dishes she would love this cookbook anyway.  She would devour the beautiful photo's.

Food With Friends would be a great Mother's Day Gift and deserves my 5 star rating!

Vintage Cakes--Cookbook Review

The cover caught my eye.  Yummy!!!!!   And, I love anything Vintage so I knew I would enjoy this cookbook.

Vintage Cakes offers a fun collection of updated recipes for both classic and forgotten cakes.  Some I was familiar with but some were new to me.

There are recipes for layer cakes, rolls, bundt cakes and even no-bake cakes. And of course cupcakes!  There are over 50 different recipes with wonderful color photos.  I loved the use of vintage items in the photography.

The author tested 'old fashioned' grandma recipes and made some changes to update . . .
"I was happy to rid the recipes of any Crisco, Primex, Sweetex and margarine! I replaced the processed fats with good old-fashioned butter for the yummiest flavor and canola oil for tenderizing the crumb and adding moisture to the cake," Richardson said.

This site actually has some of the recipes and great photo's from the cookbook.  Click Here

I really enjoyed reading this cookbook and looking at the photo's.  I was inspired to try a few of the recipes.

I looked around the internet to see where you might purchase.  It appears to be widely available at
Amazon and a few other places.

Check it out.  You might consider purchasing a copy for a new bride.  I think it would make a great wedding gift.

Thanks for visiting today.   I am off to the library for a new cookbook to share with you next week.

Vintage Betty Crocker Cookbook Review

Do you have a favorite cookbook?  If I am not going to the Pioneer Woman for help I am going to good 'ole Betty.

Betty Crocker
This is my staple cookbook.  I got my copy when I got married and I use it alot.

It is where I found out how to make perfect rice (without buying Minuete Rice).
Page 221 has a recipe for oven steamed rice.  I tried it years ago and it makes perfect rice.   Everytime!

My copy is worn in places from lots of use.  I have written in the margins and made notes for my daughter someday I'll give her my copy.  But I'll have to break down and buy a new one.  Once I save a few dollars.
It's kind of crazy how expensive they are!

It's a cookbook with simple to read instructions.  The recipes are pretty much just normal everyday food.
Some of the recipes are a little funny since it was printed waaaaay back in the '70's and housewifes entertained way differently than they do now.

For example the salad section has a complete section on Molded Salads; as in jello type salads.
Betty is my go to girl for a great Ceasar Salad.  I love the recipe.  I leave out the anchovy fillet.
    Cucumber Souffle Salad

I think I'll pass.  Not a fan of cucumbers. LOL

The Lunchtime Sandwich section is a little humorous with a recipe called Chili Dogs, Taco Hot Dogs and Franks and Sauerkraut.

One of my favorite recipes is in quick breads.  Popovers are just so yummy.  I made some the other night I just had this craving.  They bring back sweet memories for me.  Popovers were a special breakfast treat for our family.  On special days my mother would bake them.
Popovers are hard to discribe.  They are super simple to make and take on a few ingredients.  They rise up really pretty and they are usually hollow in the middle leaving a wonderful place for lots of butter.

The simple muffin recipe is another favorite.  I would much rather make a muffin from scratch than buy a box mix.  I have used the muffin recipe alot even for dinner simply not putting fruit in the recipe give you a great little bread for a meal.

Chocolate Chip Muffins are super simple and yummy.

One recipe I cannot master is the biscuit recipe.  And, I am still looking for the perfect recipe.  I am just biscuit challenged!

If you don't have this 'ole time favorite look around at your antique shops or on the inter-net.  You'll enjoy the simple just down home recipes.

30 Minute Meals A Cookbook Review

I've been visiting my local library alot lately and I discovered another great cookbook!

Here's an overview from Barnes and Noble . . .
Southern Living solves the constant dinner dilemma with What's for Supper. This all-inclusive book of easy and delicious alternatives to fast food is a one-stop guide to quicker meals families can simply enjoy. Contributing Editor and Southern Living Test Kitchens expert Vanessa McNeil Rocchio has provided over 150 of her favorite 30-minute recipes that are fast, simple, and full of fl avor. From kid-favorites like Grilled Chicken Tacos and Tangy Turkey Burgers to sure-to-become family favorites like Chicken ...

And what I thought?  I loved it!  I've already made a couple of the dishes.  This is definately a cookbook that I would buy!
What I really liked were the beautiful photos and the instructions were easy to follow.

Like  the Cumin-Crusted Pork Cutlets which I tried!
I happened to have pork cutlets in my freezer!

Each main dish has a complementing dish which they call a Sidekick.

The sidekick suggested with the pork cutlets was Cabbage and Apple Slaw.  It was simple and quick and yummy!

I also cooked the Pork Fried Rice.  I changed it a little using ground pork I already had cooked and waiting for a recipe!

There are 251 pages of yummy recipes just waiting for you to try!
A few of the chapters included are
Dinners in the Pantry
No Cook Suppers
Picky Eaters
Cooking for Two
Slow Cooker

This one is definately worth trying.  I noticed a few other bloggers have reviewed this cookbook also.  You can goole the title to find other reviews.

Check it out at your library or order your copy from Amazon or
Barnes and Noble.

Happy Cooking
