It was the kind of invitation Katie Stillwell had only dreamed about: a dinner party at the Sonoma mansion of famed wine collector Paul Rafferty to celebrate a rare bottle of wine. Everyone enjoys drinking the $19,000 wine, but Katie realizes it’s not the older vintage listed on the label. When she confides in Mr. Rafferty, he asks her to investigate, and she soon discovers the deception goes beyond money. As Katie falls deeper into the world of counterfeit wine, she learns everything is at stake—even her life

My Interview
Hello I am delighted to chat with you today!

Thank you, I’m excited to be here!

I visited your website today.  What a delight it was!
I think I want to be you!  You must have a very fun and interesting life.

Thank you so much!

You seem to be a very busy lady.  Of all the jobs you have can you share which is your favorite?
Definitely writing novels. I’ve wanted to be a writer ever since I first held a crayon, well, maybe a pencil, but a very long time. I love developing stories and creating scenarios.

This might be a hard question but where is your favorite place to eat?
This is a tough question but I would have to say a Thai restaurant on the coast. It’s so good and I try to order a lot so I have leftovers, but I have to admit, those don’t last long.

As an author do you find yourself randomly thinking about stories and plots when you’re at a great restaurant?
I’m constantly thinking about stories wherever I am. My brain doesn’t ever shut off and I’m always imagining situations, sometimes much to my husband’s dismay. For example, if a door is cracked open, I immediately think someone is waiting, etc. However, I do have some restaurant scenarios in the third Sommelier Mystery that occurred in the last year so I’m definitely pulling from real life.

Speaking of plots let’s talk about Uncorking A Lie. I am curious where you came up with the plot.  Have you had any experience with counterfeit wine?
I thought it would be fun to have Katie encounter an incident involving one of her restaurant customers and where her deductive wine skills sort of get her in trouble. A counterfeit wine was the perfect scenario for those two things to happen. Although I haven’t had any personal experience with counterfeit wine, I do have friends who have encountered suspicious bottles. I think there’s a lot of things in life that we hope are one thing and they turn out to be another, which is the case with the bottle in Uncorking a Lie.

I see you seem to travel a lot. If you could go anywhere in the world to write where would you go?
Ooh, this is an excellent question. Hmm… I would have to say maybe a chateau in France where I could stare out at vineyards while I write and then enjoy a lot of fantastic food and wine. My second choice would be a cozy coffee shop with a comfy chair and a view of the ocean in various countries around the world.

Will we be seeing Katie traveling in the future?
I hope so! I would love to send Katie to wine regions all over the globe and especially France where her uncle owns a winery.

I imagine with your background in wine you don’t need to do any special or extra research. But I was wondering if and how you research the crime aspects of your stories?
I don’t have to do any special research for wine but I do have two wine friends read my final drafts just to make sure I haven’t missed anything. As for crime aspects, I do a lot of Googling so hopefully my browser history isn’t an issue in the future. I spent a lot of time researching how long it would take for a body to float in a vat of wine and while it was interesting to learn about the science of it, I ended up not using the scenario after all.

I love a good meal, a good glass of wine and a cozy read.  I can’t wait to open up
Uncorking A Lie.  I know once I do I’ll have many more questions.  I hope you’ll come by again!

Thanks for a lovely time.

Thank you so much for having me! This interview was a lot of fun and I look forward to stopping by again!
