Foodie Friday After The Storm

Foodie Friday After The Storm

Hello. I've missed a couple weeks.

Tropical Storm Nicholas took out our power!

38 hours! It was a mess. Our fridge and freezer were full! Sad.

Odd thing was it was only a few areas. Our neighbor behind us had power! I could see her lights.

Power is on now and fridge has food and we had some good meals this week . . .

The beginning of the week I was still recuperating! And we had not gotten out to restock.

I had been wanting to try a restaurant at The Yacht Marina.

I wanted to go to see the boats.

The Cowboy  wasn't feeling well we went to late . . .

I got Chicken Tenders and fries.

Mc Donald's is better. I ordered Onion Rings but they were out. I am sure I didn't miss anything though.

The Cowboy did enjoy his Fish and Chips. I'll get the Fish next time.

I usually try to start my post on Sunday or  Monday and get pictures
started.  Otherwise I forget when I cooked what . . .

One day we had this very, very good Fettuccine Alfredo.  I must say it was the best I have ever made.
And I winged it with no recipe.

The Salad was o.k. a bag from Walmart.  Not really a keeper.

The Cowboy complimented me on the presentation.  Since I was using the white Salad bowls I chose the Green plates from Pier One.

I miss Pier one!  Do you?

I must have been on a roll this week with Pasta.  Best Spaghetti Same I have ever made!  Hmm.  I stared 1  can just cheap Spaghetti Sauce and 1 can Stewed Tomatoes.  I used all powders instead of fresh Garlic and Onion because I was put.  I did have fresh Basil.  I bought a plant in at the grocery store.

Breakfast for Dinner Thursday night.
On Monday I made Potato Soup.
I cooked a bunch of Potatoes the night before.
Sort of like Batch cooking.
The Cowboy asked for Cheese on Sandwich.  Kind of weird I thought.

Another really good meal.  A Hamburger Steak, Creamed Spinach and Mashed be Potatoes.
I used to canned Spinach.  It turned out great!

We tried a new Breakfast/Lunch place by the Cowboys doctor office.

Eggs cooked just right.
Potatoes perfect.
And best Biscuits on the Island!
We saw a neighbor he's been eating there every week for 6 years!
Look at those Pancakes
Crunchy Potatoes with Onion just how I ordered!

One more plate.  Too white!
But yummy.  A Kielbasa, Rice with Cream Gravy and Black Eye Peas.

A fun week.  With some great food.

Now to plan next week!

Character Guest Post Meet Bonnie Balfour Main Character Burden Of Proof by Julie Ann Lindsey

September 20 – My Journey Back the Journey Back – CHARACTER GUEST POST

Hey, y’all! Welcome to Bless Her Heart! I’m Bonnie Balfour, and this is my kitty companion, Clyde. This is our newly opened second-chance shop. Feel free to look around.

Clyde is cute, isn’t he? I made him a set of bowties to match or at least coordinate with most of my outfits. You can pet him, he doesn’t mind. But be careful, he’ll probably steal your bracelet, barrette or anything else you drop. He’s ornery like that.

I adopted him, or rather, he adopted me a little while back, and he came with the name, Clyde, because he likes to collect things that aren’t his. A furry little outlaw of sorts. So, the name definitely fits. Together, we’re not a pair of criminals like the other Bonnie & Clyde most folks know about, but we are the sort of pair that sticks together through thick-or-thin, kind of friends. After opening this shop and baking all night to clear my head, we’re experiencing a lot of the thick-and-thin right now. Mostly, my much-thicker waistline and a significantly thinner bank balance. But that’s life, right?

You probably don’t know it, but I grew up here. I left for college and was gone almost twenty years. That’s probably why you don’t recognize me. You must’ve moved here while I was away. You might know my folks though, Bud and Blossom? They own Bud’s and Blossom’s Flower Farm? Yes! That’s them. They’re wonderful. I’ll let them know I saw you. Anyway, it’s great being home. There are plenty of rural, small towns in Georgia, but none quite like Bliss. Clyde and I are making a fresh new life for ourselves, busy turning castoff things into coveted treasures. Go on and try that silk blouse. You won’t want to take it off. I changed up the buttons and adjusted the collar, but that’s about all. It’s your color for sure.

Mama taught me to sew. And to see beauty in everything. Life on a flower farm taught me how to stretch a budget. It’s the reason I opened this little shop on the square. It’s crammed plum full of old things I made new again, and they’re on sale for a dime. Looks like a picture straight out of Shabby Chic Magazine, doesn’t it? I’ve got revamped ball gowns from the last century looking like they came off a modern-day runway, and incredibly detailed furniture pieces from fifty years ago, shining bright under a new coat of paint and fresh knockers. You know how much fresh paint and new knockers can spruce up a look. * stage wink *

Anyway, it’s good to be home. And see there? That blouse is perfect. Want me to take it over to the counter for you? What’s that? No, Mrs. Abbott-Harrington was already dead when I found her. She’s was all but buried under that big pile of ball gowns. No, they were donations. Of course I didn’t kill her! Goodness! Doesn’t matter what the paper said. The paper’s wrong. Well, that homicide detective is on loan from up north somewhere and he’s just poking rocks. He doesn’t appear to know his hat from a hole in the ground. Pardon my French. That’s why Clyde and I are going to see if we can point Detective Grumpy in the right direction, which is away from me, if you know what I’m saying. If we get things wrapped up fast enough, maybe he’ll head back to wherever he came from, before he stirs up anymore nonsense. What’s that?

Oh, detective! I didn’t see you there. Pardon me while I just finish up with this customer.

I’ve got to go tend to that. I’ll ring the blouse up when you’re ready. Holler if you need anything!

I hope you’ve enjoyed meeting Bonnie, and that you’ll give my new Bonnie and Clyde mysteries a try. BURDEN OF POOF is available now!

Character Interview Meet Daisy Cover Dog-Swimming with the fishes by Marc Jedel

Guest Interview with Daisy, the protagonists’ dog in SWIMMING WITH THE FISHES

With last week’s events, chronicled in SWIMMING WITH THE FISHES, now safely in the past, I wanted to interview one of the characters to help you learn a little more about what happened. However, everyone is still extremely busy dealing with the aftermath so I could only secure an interview with Daisy, the border collie in the book. Jonas and Elizabeth Trout are her humans. Since she seems to know everything that’s going on, I thought she could bring us a unique perspective on what happened.

“Hi, there. You must be Daisy,” I said, bending over to pet the well-groomed border collie who had come over to greet me.

“Yes, yes, I am. I’m Daisy Trout.” She “spoke” quickly in an excited tone as she sniffed my hand and seemed to smile at me.

“Well, you’re a real cutie, aren’t you?”

“Why thank you. You smell very nice too. Is that oatmeal milk honey soap?” She took one more inhale to confirm.

I knelt down so I’d be on eye level with her. “So I wanted to interview you to learn more about Jonas and Elizabeth—”

“Oh,” she interrupted. “They’re my humans. They’re the best.” She wagged her tail enthusiastically.

“Can you tell me a little about—”

Daisy dashed away before I could finish my question but returned nearly as quickly. “I’m terribly sorry,” she said bashfully. “I thought they were going for a walk. But they’re not.” She sighed.

I nodded sympathetically at her sad expression. “It’s okay. I understand. So about Jonas and Elizabeth—”

“Oh, they’re the best,” Daisy interjected.

“That’s . . . that’s wonderful,” I said. “I understand you helped them out last week?”

Jiggling from side to side, she answered, “It was nothing. I’m just happy to help. I’m truly, truly happy. I really, really like it here.”

“Yes, Arkansas can be beautiful.”

“It smells interesting. But I liked the other places too.”

“What places?” I asked.

“All the other places.” She nodded as if to agree with herself. “Wherever Jonas and Elizabeth take me is great. They’re the best. Oh, excuse me.” She dashed off again.

She returned shortly. “So sorry. They’re too busy for a walk right now, but Jonas petted me!” She turned in a tight circle and wagged her tail vigorously, nearly knocking over a picture frame on the side table.

Catching her eye again, I said, “Getting back to our interview, how did you help their friends Vanessa and Olivia last week?”

“I like Olivia. She’s super nice. I got to sleep on the bed with her. Even Jonas and Elizabeth don’t let me sleep on their bed. And Olivia played with me a lot. I like her. She’s much nicer than those people in that shelter.”

“That’s right, you’re a rescue dog, aren’t you?”

“No, I haven’t rescued anybody.” Daisy shook her head.

“I mean Jonas and Elizabeth adopted you from a shelter that specializes in rescuing abused dogs,” I said.

“They’re the best. And Olivia too.” Daisy nodded firmly before growing solemn. “I don’t like to talk about before them. It wasn’t very good.” Then her mood brightened again. “Now everything is great.”

“Let’s just talk about last week then,” I suggested. “How did you help solve the case?”

“I don’t know. Things just happened.” Daisy appeared to shrug. “I just went for walks and looked around at everything. Same old same old for me. Oh! I went running a lot with Jonas. He likes to run. I do too. It’s super fun.”

Realizing that was probably all I’d get from her, I wrapped things up. “Well, thanks Daisy for sharing your thoughts with our readers today.”

“I’m very glad I could help,” she said. “Can I ask you a question, though?”

“Sure,” I said as I put away my pen and notebook.

“Could you take me for a walk?”

If you’d like to meet Daisy’s owners and learn what actually happened with the murder, sleuthing, and secrets, be sure to read SWIMMING WITH THE FISHES, the latest in the Ozarks Lake Mystery series. You can read it standalone or start with book 1—FISH OUT OF WATER

And here's Devon's

Ingredients

6 tablespoons ranch dressing

1½ tablespoons prepared horseradish

1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper

2 teaspoons ground coffee

1½ teaspoons ground cumin

1½ teaspoons ancho chile powder

4 (4-ounce) beef tenderloin steaks, trimmed (1 inch thick)

Cooking spray

¼ cup chopped shallots

¼ cup chopped fresh basil

¼ cup chopped bottled roasted red bell peppers

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

12 cherry tomatoes, halved

6 cups loosely packed arugula

12 (1-ounce) slices French bread, toasted

Preparation:

Combine dressing and horseradish in a small bowl; cover and chill.

Combine black pepper, coffee, cumin, and chile powder. Rub both sides of steaks with pepper mixture; let stand 10 minutes. Heat a nonstick grill pan over medium heat. Coat steaks with cooking spray. Add steaks to pan; cook 3 minutes on each side or until desired degree of doneness. Remove steaks from pan; let stand 7 minutes.

Combine shallots, basil, bell peppers, juice, and tomatoes in a small bowl; toss well.

Arrange 1 cup arugula on each of 6 plates; top each serving with 2 toast slices. Cut steaks diagonally across grain into thin slices. Divide steak evenly among toast slices; top each serving with about 2 tablespoons tomato mixture. Drizzle each serving with about 1 tablespoon dressing mixture. Serve immediately. Yield: 6 servings.

On The Rustic Dinner Plate & Foodie Friday featuring Beef Stroganoff by Author Victoria Hamilton

I have a special treat today!  I am sharing the Hamburger Stroganoff that I cooked from author Victoria Hamilton's  recipe that I shared on my regular Menu Monday post.

On Monday I put on a pot of Split Peas.  I intended to cook White Beans but the cupboard was bare.  I could have sworn I had a sack of beans!

But the Split Peas were great with left overs from the neighbor.  The Cowboy had a Tortilla and a Biscuit too along with the grilled Steak.

I didn't stick to to my plan but I did make sure to make this!

This was mentioned a few weeks ago and I couldn't wait till it was posted so I could try.
The original post is at a cooking blog by Authors.
How cool is that!
The original post and recipe is over at Mystery Lovers Kitchen click Here

Yum!  A winner!  I have no idea what happened to my prep pictures but believe me this recipe was super easy!  Makes up quick and taste so good!

Bye Bye Hamburger Helper.  It's not as good as it used to be anyway!

Cleaning out the freezer for grocery shopping next week.  Last piece of Kielbasa, Chopped Broccoli and Boxed Scalloped Potatoes.
I would rather make fresh but it is what it is.
These are good perfect size for the two of us and leftovers for doggies!

And no Pizza this week.  The Cowboy suggested a place with Chicken Fried Steak.  Drove there and they were closed!  Bummer.

We ended up here

For this . . .

The Cowboy loves the Menudo
I thought it was clever they put a Tortilla under the bowl to soak up spills!

I had Chicken  Flautas.  It is a big plate but only 8.00
I only eat 2.  I have Flautas for lunch the next day.  That's a bargain!

One more shot of the garnish on the Cowboy's plate.  It is diced Onions, Jalapenos and Cilantro.  He doesn't eat the garnish so I always take it home for seasoning another dish.

We finally made it out for breakfast

A yummy treat.  I liked the Do Nuts better.  HeHe.  And, I don't miss Krispy Kreme anymore!
This little place is great!

We had a great week of some yummy food!

I hope you got some good ideas!
Be sure and try the Stroganoff!

You can meet  Victoria over  Here
And while your there check out her new release!  I can't wait to read it!
