A Photo And Story

                                   T:
Once upon a time a young boy looked at a white fence surrounding
an arena filled with sand.  He sat on the fence watching as the tractor moved around loosening the sand just right to provide the perfect footing.  The sand had to soft not firmly packed.  Slightly deep.

The boy watched and dreamed of one day being the one riding the tractor getting the arena ready for the rider.

It wasn't his only dream.  He had much bigger dreams than sitting on the tractor.  He dreamed one day he would ride a horse.  Not just any horse and not just any kind of riding.

He dreamed one day he would train a reining horse.  He dreamed of going to a futurity.  (a special competition for young horses)

So he got off that fence and he began to work.  He worked hard.
He mucked stalls and filled a truck with horse manure and hauled it away.  Everyday after school he went to the barn and cleaned up.

Everyday he watched other teenagers riding horses while he cleaned the stalls.

He built a library of books and magazines with information about reining and breeding.  And he studied.  Soaking in the knowledge that he hoped he would someday be able to use.

He made it to that futurity with his horse. (which he had bred and trained himself)  He worked hard with that little filly.  They were constant companions.

And then one day his eye wandered.  He noticed a filly of another 'sort'.  She captured his eye and his heart.    And then his dreams began to change.

He never forgot his first love.  Even  though he began to chase two legged youngsters.  He never forgot his dream of  sittin' on that tractor.

And then many years later.  It happened.  It wan't expected.
Someone remembered that young man and the horse he rode in that futurity.

The opportunity presented itself.  And now he's sittin' on that
tractor.  Makin' that dirt just right.

And now his little girl is walkin' in that dirt and dreamin'.

We Love Snowmen

Welcome to Wit and Wisdom on Wednesday hosted by Linda Kay!
A fun link where we share a photo and tell a story!

                                    T:
I've always loved Christmas and Santa Claus.  Maybe it goes back to that ill-fated birthday when I asked for a Barbie cake and got Santa!  (For that story click here).  I began a Santa Claus collection in about
1990.  It's grown in leaps and bonds!

In 2000 I/we were living in Potosi, Missouri.  (I called it Misery) We left Texas to go to a job in
Boulder, Colo.  Six months later we were in Potosi.   I pictured Gilmore Girls.  What we got was
more like Duke's of Hazard or something similar.  I can't describe it.

It really wasn't the people.  They were fabulous! It was the fact that Pitosi is 2 hours from a mall.
It was 45 min. one way to a Walmart.  Yes ma'm there was no Walmart in Pitosi.

They built a Taco Bell while we were there.  We got sick of Taco Bell!

But, the people were darling.  I have a lot of friends left living in Pitosi.  In fact our son and his family are still there!

While we were there to keep myself busy I  began recruiting friends from church into crafts and quilting.

One group got together weekly at my house and we made soft sculpture snowmen.  I had the patterns in my stash.  I just collected all the supplies and sewed up the snowmen before the class.  On class day the ladies stuffed the snowmen and added embelishments and dressed them.

It was a fun time.  That year for my birthday everyone gave me snowmen.  Hence the Snowman tree.
Many of the this treasures came from those ladies!

There were indeed a Blessing from God.  They made those days bearable for me.  I'm grateful to have these sweet ornaments to remember that sweet time.

The Sad Birthday Cake--Wit/Wisdom Wednesday

Joining Linda Kay for Wit and Wisdom.  The day we share a photo
or picture and write a story . . .
My birthday is a few days away so I thought it might be interesting to share about one of my birthdays.
Don't worry you won't need tissues.  And please don't think bad of me when you read my story.  I can't afford therapy;so I must use the blog world as my opportunity to bear my soul. (insert wink)

Do you remember turning 8 years old and being excited about your birthday party?
I was sooooo excited!  My 8 year old birthday (why my parents chose 8 I am clueless) was the year I got to have a 'real' party.
I got to invite friends from school.
I remember weeks before talking and talking about how I wanted a Barbie party.  That was the year that I asked Santa for a Barbie doll like my older sisters.
I was soooo excited.  I don't remember how many friends from school came to my party.
I remember coming home from school expecting to find pink balloons and streamers.  I was expecting this fabulous Barbie display.
I can remember walking in the door and being confused to see red and green balloons.  The crepe paper streamers stretched across the little half wall (my mother called a partition) that separated the living room from the dining room were red and blue.
I'm thinking to myself 'where's the pink.'
And then I saw It. The cake that was supposed to be a Barbie cake was a Santa Claus cake.
I was crushed.  I was actually embarrassed because all my friends (the girls. I didn't talk to the boys) expected Barbie.
                                     We got Santa.
I was grateful that I got to have a party.  It was the only 'party' with friends from school I had growing up.

I wonder now if I was such a brat over the cake that my parents never gave me another party.

I hope not.  I hope it was just their thing to do one party.

I really don't remember.  I do remember until I was an adult that was the only store bought cake I ever had.

My mother redeemed herself the next year and made my favorite
Strawberry cake.  It was one of those cake mix cakes you poke holes in and pour jello over.  It's served with fresh strawberries and cool whip. Yummmeee!
I guess I got over the Santa Cake incident.  You'd think it would have been tarnished for life. I'm not!  And Yes, Virginia there is a Santa.
Image result for there is a santa
She must have wanted a Barbie cake too!
                            Merry Christmas

5 Minute Friday--Table

Welcome.  I'm joining Kate for 5 Minute Friday.
The challenge.  Writing from a prompt for only 5 Minutes.
and a couple other rules.  Get the scoop over at Kate's . . .

Start
This table. It was bittersweet to get it back.  I love my table.
It spent a few years with our daughter.  She returned it after her divorce when she moved into an apartment.
Oh the stories this table could tell I am sure.
It remembers the years that we sat around it at Thanksgiving with The Cowboy not so silently tapping his foot.  Wishing the long feast would end so he and our son could jump in the truck and head for the woods.
This beautiful old table knows stories that I don't even know to share with you.
We bought it at an auction.  When it came up to bid we were crossing our fingers and praying.  Our prayers were answered we felt like we stole it!  We only paid $700.00.
It's one of those items that we need to take to Antique Road
Show.  We've never seen another one like it.  (I've searched a little but not too hard) to find out more about it.
But I kinda really don't care what it's actually worth.
To me it is worth millions.
Oh yes there are stories.  Many more stories than I can tell in this limited amount of time.
So, another day another story.  Hmm maybe more on Wednesday.
Stop!

Wednesday Wit and Wisdom

Happy almost Thanksgiving Day to you!
Before I begin my day of prep.  I was inspired by this photo to write a post for Wit and Wisdom to share with you and Linda Kay!
With or Without, 57 x 67", quilt pattern by Cheryl Wittmayer. Shown in Marcia Derse fabrics:
                                                                                  Source
I saw this on Pinterest this morning and fell in love!  I love the colors.  I love the designs.
I can imagine texture.  I love the way the border becomes a part of the quilt in the rows!

I actually had another post planned but I thought today I would share this fabulous photo
and a little about me and my passion for quilting.

I began sewing as a small girl.  In high school I took the required Home Ec. class was bored
in both the sewing and cooking by the second day.  I began cooking the entire evening meal by the time I was in 5th grade. (My mother worked nights)

I've sewn garments for myself (without a tremendous amount of success) off and on until 1982 when our daughter was born.  For a few years I found my niche.  I sewed everything
we put on her body.  She had dresses for every occasion and shoes to.  Because I saved so much money on clothes we could afford to buy shoes.  (I spoiled her she has a shoe fetish)

I learned tailoring techniques.  I made jodphurs for her with a jean type fly front zipper
out of pale lavender corduroy.   (I wish had the forethought to keep them!)

All my sewing was done on an old Elna machine that had been my mothers.  I had no book but a bagillion feet and gears that I knew nothing about.  I didn't know anything about tension or how a machine works.  I just plugged along and sewed and ripped out and tinkered and probably cussed a little till I managed a decent stitch.

I was self taught.  Well not exactly I was taught by Singer and Butterick.  Everything I knew how or learned to do was through patterns.  The patterns explained in detail how to make the garment.

I developed a fairly good skill for a person that doesn't read instructions well.  I am more of a hands on kind of learner.  Show me how to do something and I can do it.

Give me an instruction manual and I'll read a few steps and skip to the end.

And then The Cowboy got a really, really good job.  And he bought me a Bernina in August of the year our daughter was in 2nd grade.     Only a few months later in January  we moved our kids to private school.  And I was crushed.  She began wearing uniforms.  I had no idea what I was going to do with this expensive machine!

And then one day I stumbled onto a quilt shop.   Scratch that . . . Into a quilt shop.

I haven't been the same since.   I loved that little shop.  I learned a lot.   I met ladies that over 20 years later I still keep in touch with.

I meant to mention when I was talking about my first machine that this was waaaay before
the internet.  But you probably figured that out.

I took classes on all kinds of disciplines of quilting.  I listened.  I learned.  We students absorbed the information garnered by these fine ladies as Gospel.

But there was a problem.  I pieced the tops and then I was stuck.   I was spending so much money on fabric and classes that I really didn't have what was needed to actually have the quilts quilted.  At least I thought I didn't.

The trend at the time was to take your quilt tops to professional quilters.  Long arm quilting was beginning to be a big business and industrious and creative quilters that had a little extra money began purchasing machines and starting their own businesses.

When I shopped for a quilter within my budget that's when I found out some were better than others.

Luckily the quilt that I took to be quilted wasn't a great piece but the poor workmanship
put an abrupt halt to my sending my quilts out to be quilted.

And so for many years my tops have laid waiting to be finished.

Because of the inter net and Leah Day I've have taken the plunge and begun quilting my own quilts.  Since finding Pinterest I've absorbed pins and videos much like I did back in the day when I was taking classes.

I can do this because I don't have to 'read' instructions.  I can watch a video and figure it out.

I've come along way.  I have a long way to go.  I've accomplished my desire to quilt a king size quilt on my domestic machine.   The work isn't perfect.  My poor little machine tries it's hardest.  It doesn't make beautiful stitches like my Bernina (it's sick needs to go to the shop)
but I don't make quilts meant to 'show'  I don't need a blue ribbon.

                                                                  I just love the process.
                                                    That's why I make quilts.

Wednesday Filled With Words

Wednesday Filled With Words ---Once Upon A Time

Once upon a time there was a little girl who dreamed big dreams.
Her dreams were big or at least she thought they were because if they were to come true  . . .
It would be really, really Big.
And so she dreamed . . .
She would sit in the car and watch for fences as the family drove through the country.  Not just any fence but special fences.  Fences that meant . . .

She loved weekends when the family toured the countryside.
And she dreamed.

Every day when she walked home from school she would stop.

She would look around to see if anyone was watching.  And slowly tentatively she would reach up and climb a fence.

All the while hoping that maybe today was the day she actually got to touch . .  .
And she would say to him. " I would not leave you here all alone."
And . . .  'I'll save all my kisses only for you.'

And she knew that one day her dreams would come true . . .

                                             And they did
And her . . .
                            Trails were Happy
And she gave him all her kisses until one day. . .
She kissed the Cowboy.  And that's another story.

Wednesday Filled With Words

Wednesday Filled With Words
Wednesdays the day I've been setting aside to write.  Most of my posts are about homemaking, cooking, book reviews, or photo's.

On Wednesday I've either been posting illustrated scripture . . .

Or writing a post about something I've been thinking about.

The other day a topic that Lisa Jo suggested hit me close to home.   The topic was "Close".
I thought about what I would say if someone said.  Who are your close friends.
It makes me sad to say but I don't have any close friends.  There are people I know at work.  But I wouldn't really consider them my friends.  They don't even have my phone number.

I got to thinking about that word and what it means to me in respect to my blog.   I started My Journey Back at a time that I was
really lonely.  I've used this photo for my header and in my posts a lot.  It represents how I feel a lot.

It's not what I want but it is what it is.  I don't have a closeness with
anyone.  No girlfriends to call up and meet for lunch.
I hope when i reach their age, i have good friends still around to enjoy moments like these ;-)
That's why my blog is important to me.  Meeting people through my blog gives me a chance to find new friends.

Hahaha, me on the scale. Zesipho with the advice.
Sometimes I need a shoulder to cry on.

Sometimes I just need a sounding board.

Sometimes I need someone to ask 'How was your day.'

I've been thinking about this post and how to write it for awhile.

How to share my heart without being whiney and at the same time express how I feel.

My blog is important to me.  .
The sweet friends that visit and leave a comment brighten my day.
