Book Review-Called For Justice--A Quaker Midwife Series by Edit Maxwell

About the book
Quaker midwife Rose Carroll is enjoying the 1888 Independence Day evening fireworks with her beau when a teenaged Quaker mill girl is found shot dead. After a former slave and fellow Quaker is accused of the murder, Rose delves into the crime, convinced of the man’s innocence. An ill-mannered mill manager, an Irish immigrant, and the victim’s young boyfriend come under suspicion even as Rose’s future with her handsome doctor suitor becomes unsure. Rose continues to deliver babies and listen to secrets, finally figuring out one criminal – only to be threatened by the murderer, with three lives at stake. Can she rescue herself, a baby, and her elderly midwifery teacher in time?

And I thought
Hmm.  I wasn't sure how I would feel about this book.  The first few pages were a bit slow for me.  But after a short awhile I was hooked.  I am 'learning' to be a fan of historical romances and now mysteries.   I've never read a cozy mystery from an historical period.  Called For Justice was food for thought for me about the genre of historical mysteries.

The story was steady.

The reader journeys along with Rose as she moves through her day doing the job of Midwifery that she is called to do.

There is some romance involved.  Rose has a relationship with
Dr. David.  As in any good romance their relationship there is an older girl friend or 'wanna be' girlfriend or in this case... David's mother.  The romance is hindered by his mothers interference.
But not for long.  David set his foot down and straightened out his mother.

Not only David win points with me in standing up to his mother and her interference he won points by supporting Rose in her
sleuthing.  Rather than being all concerned, bothered and trying to tell Rose what to do.  He actually supports her.  His understanding and support bolsters the relationship between himself and Rose.

Rose begins to ask questions and starts her own investigation when a friend of hers is taken in for questioning about the shooting.
Rose is determined to prove his innocence and find the real killer.

The reader is swept along the way with Rose as a plethora of events and questions arise.  Rose is determined even until the end to find the true killer who turns out to be a big surprise.

I enjoyed reading Called For Justice.  The authors attention to detail in describing the job(s) tasks of mid wife in the time period made for an interesting read.   And I can say that I might just be a new fan of historical mysteries.

I look forward to backtracking and reading book 1 in the series.

Coffee with a character the character that jumped off the page for me in Called For Justice was the police detective Kevin.  My curiosity was peaked at the relationship between the detective and Rose.  His character is a by the book cop yet he talks to Rose as almost an equal.  He does let it be known that he isn't going to divulge information about the case to her yet he accepts her investigations and listens to her suggestions and her complaints as well.  My curiosity on makes me want to read book 1 and dig more into the intrigue.

About the series-  The historical Quaker Midwife Mysteries feature unconventional Quaker midwife Rose Carroll in 1888 Amesbury, Massachusetts. The Quaker poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier is a character in the series.

About the book (provided by Litfuse)
Welcome to College: A Christ-Follower’s Guide for the Journey(Kregel, March 2017)
Is there a more frightening question for a graduating high school senior than “What will you do with your life?”
In college, whether they realize it or not, students will answer that question every day with each decision. All of the new friends and new experiences of higher education will shape their future. It’s critical that students know how to handle college before they’re in the thick of it.
Jonathan Morrow tackles the tough questions that arise during these formative years, including:
—How do you grow spiritually?
—How do you manage your time to both study well and have fun?
—Is all truth relative?
—Are there good reasons to be a Christian?
—As a Christian, how should you view issues like dating and sex?
Each chapter of this new edition has been updated, and the author has included a new chapter on Christianity, homosexuality, and the Bible. Grounded in both his own extensive experience and biblical truth, Morrow’s book is full of quick, easy-to-read chapters and excellent advice.
And I thought...
A great resource for students.
I love the subtitle...

The Birthday Guest That . . .

. . . cooked
 :
I really didn't intend for her to cook.   We planned her favorite meal Fettuccine Alfredo for her birthday dinner.

I planned a simple table around the bowls I intended to serve the salad and pasta in.  The table was set. . .

I selected vintage Corelle.  I bought at a yard sale just because I
love vintage.  The table was simple with inexpensive flatware,
the Corella and stemmed glasses from Dollar Tree.  I think stemmed glassware always makes a table look elegant even if it is Ala Cheap!
:   Our favorite Alfredo recipe is from this cookbook.  This is her copy she bought when she got married.  My tattered copy is in a box in the garage.

She also brought the cookie cake.
She is much loved.  She brought one of 3 cookie cakes.  She had 6 cupcakes at home and flowers and a few other gifts from students.

I was super organized.  I bought iceberg mix salad like Olive Garden.  I had black olives in the fridge and I had picked romaine and swiss chard from the garden washed and it was chilling.  I added red onions while she was cooking the sauce.

So when it was time to eat all I had to do was boil pasta and make sauce.  I actually don't like making Alfredo.  For some reason it's hard for me.  I just can't seem to remember the recipe and I am constantly going from recipe to sauce and back.   So I recruited her to read me the recipe.  That didn't last long.  So moved me over and began her magic . . .
  :
Good thing it was a pony tail day!
 :
My original plan was to serve the sauce and noodle from large
plain white new Corelle bowls.  We decided the pot worked
better.  So the bowls we used for the bread . . .
 :
The waiting table.  I added clear cut glass plates.  There were my mothers they are old.   The salad is served from the large bowl from a container store nesting bowl set.  Love it! .
Not so nice for a salad bowl but it worked!

Did you notice my lovely table runner.   Just a plain 'ole black towel I grabbed at the last minute.  One of the stemmed glasses got replaced by a plastic glass for our grandson.  My daughter was nervous about him handling the glass.

Everything was lovely.  It was a Blessing to celebrate our daughters 35 birthday.  Oh my word!  I can't believe it!
The entertainment began right after the meal.  X box.  Always fun for a boy and his Pa.

Note to self....
  • shop for large glass bowl for salad
  • shop for appropriate vessel to serve bread in
  • make a table runner
  • Next class at GiGi's drinking from stemware
Happy Birthday Jennifer!
I'll be planning a birthday celebration for the 8 year old soon
What fun!

Book Review-Long Time Gone-Mary Connealy

Product Details

About the book...
Someone Will Stop at Nothing to Claim the Boden Homestead!

The Boden clan thought their problems had ended with the death of a dangerous enemy, but have they uncovered the real plot to take their 1880s New Mexico ranch? Justin Boden is a top rancher and a rugged man, and yet with his brother, Cole, shot and in mortal danger, even a tough man faces doubts. And it doesn't help that Angie DuPree, the assistant to the doctor trying to save Cole, is as distracting a woman as Justin ever laid eyes on.

With her and the doc's timely skills, Cole looks to be on the mend. Now Justin and the rest of the Bodens can turn their attention back to the threats facing them. It's clear now that everything that's occurred is part of a much bigger plot that could date back to a decades-old secret. Can they pull together all the pieces before danger closes in on them, or is the risk of losing the ranch even greater than any of them could imagine?

And I thought....
Another great ride!  A bit of a surprise to me book two took up almost immediately where book one left off.
I had the opportunity to read book 1 so I was excited to be offered  Long Time Gone I was surprised to see that book 2 took up only minutes after book 1 ended.
I enjoyed all the characters from book 1 and book 2.
The romance that developed between Justice and Angie who he met in book 1 was fun to witness.  They each had their on struggles and challenges to overcome while they became closer acquainted with each other.

All the characters that Mary has created in this series are likeable, strong, independent and God fearing men and women.

I would like to read The Boden Birthright.
Although I don't feel the reader needs to read all the books in order because Mary does a great job of keeping the story moving and helping the reader stay connected with each story.
If you have the chance to read this series in order I would suggest you might enjoy it more.

I am looking forward to book three.  I am curious to see if Cole gets married off.
Is neighbor Mel going to become part of the family?
Are Ronnie and Chance going to make it home for a family reunion?

Book three here I come!

I received a complimentary copy from Bethany House.
