Inspector

I know that after the Remembrance lunch, in the Corn Hall, you and Mrs Devereux walked down Market Place to where it meets Dyer Street, and outside the lane which leads to the Woolmarket you spotted an officer from the Remembrance parade. Can you confirm who that officer was?

Climpson

No response

Inspector

Mrs Devereux confirm it was Captain Antony Ward. Is that correct?

Cat

Meow

Inspector

Had you met Captain Ward before?

Climpson

No response

Inspector

Did you recognise him?

Cat

Meow

Inspector

He was a brave officer with lots of medals to prove it.

Climpson

Coward. He wouldn’t know how to fight in a real war.

Inspector

Is that what you told him? Did you ask him about his medals?

Cat

Meeeoow

Inspector

Will someone shut that cat up?

You challenged him about the medals he was wearing, you did. You were angry. Did you accuse him of impersonating an officer?

Cat

Meow, Meeeow

Inspector

Be quiet

Cat

MEOW

Inspector

Shall I speak to the cat Mr Climpson? He seems to be more forthcoming than you. What do you have to hide?

Climpson

No response

Inspector

Mrs Devereux dragged you away from the officer and walked with you back to the entrance to the Corn Hall. Did you see anyone else?

Climpson

No response

Inspector

What did you do after Mrs Devereux left you at the entrance to the Corn Hall?

Cat

Quiet Meow

Inspector

Quite right. This one-sided interview is frustrating. Mr Climpson where do you go after Mrs Devereux returned inside the Corn Hall?

Sigh.

Mr Climpson, I’m placing a photograph on the desk of items found at or near the Ram sculpture, where the body was found. Do you recognise them.

Climpson

Sharp intake of breath

Inspector

You do recognise something?

Climpson

No response

Inspector

How about the enamelled red poppy with the emblem of a sphinx in the centre?

Cat

Meeeow

Inspector

It’s the regimental poppy for the Gloucestershire Regiment. The regiment both your father and your late employer, the Duke of Ditchford served in.

Climpson

No response

Inspector

Mr Climpson. You were seen wearing such a brooch on Remembrance Sunday. And you told one of my officers that the brooch in the photograph is yours. Please can you confirm that for the tape.

Cat

Meow, Meoow

 Inspector

This is impossible!

Knock on the Door

Inspector

What?

Constable Varma

Inspector, Dotty Sayers has come to collect the cat.

Inspector

You? Perhaps you should join this interview. At least you’ll have more to say about it than Mr Climpson.

Cat

MEOW

Inspector

On second thoughts, just get that cat out of here. It’s doing my head in, it is.
