An interview the author...
1. What
genre do you write and why? I write picture books. Why? It seems to come naturally to me. I am an illustrator first and think visually, so I think that’s a big part of it. Someday I’d like to write a picture book with no words!
I never try to teach a lesson.
An idea for a story usually comes to me, and I have to write about it. For
Bossy Flossy the idea came from a number of places. I was watching a home video
of my daughter Sophia when she was about six years old directing a play that
starred her two little sisters and the dog. She was very bossy, but also very
direct and concise about what she wanted. So when writing Bossy Flossy I tried
to keep in mind her innocence, her directness, and her frustration as a child.
If I switch into thinking like an adult when I’m writing I becomes too
preachy and didactic.
3. What is the most frustrating part of creating a picture book?
Having a great beginning and a great ending,
but no middle is the most frustrating. The middle keeps the story fresh and
appealing. It keeps the story moving forward and reaching a climax before being
resolved. It cannot be boring.
4. Do
you have any hobbies?
Crossword puzzles, but only easy ones, because I
get frustrated very easily. I also love to read. I can’t go anywhere without a
book. I used to surf, but then I broke my leg. Reading is safer.
5. How
many books do you read in a month?
I read about three to five books a month on
average. I like to read at night before I go to sleep. Of course if it’s a
really good book I have a hard time stopping!
Lately I’ve been in a slump and haven’t read much. I’ve been doing
crossword puzzles at night and playing Words
with Friends with my sister, Sandra. She always wins.
And what I thought about Bossy Flossy . . .
Charming. Colorful. Delightful. At least the moral was. Flossy is a bit bossy. She is bossy to her poor animals. She is bossy to her cat and brother and mother. And her friends at school. And then one day she meets someone who bosses her back. She's met her match and finds a friend. And learns to be a friend.
I enjoyed reading this sweet little book. Well it's not little. It's rather big. Perfect for little ones.
It's a book for parents to read and discuss with younger children. Older children can read on their own.
The illustrations are charming. This is a fun book for everyone! A great book to give to a child.
